Article #13:Response to "Twisty"Friday, December 7th, 2007: It's kind of neat to have one's own forum to say what ever they feel like saying. I would venture to say that it is almost therapeutic for me at times. Most often...I write these little blurbs when something is on my mind, and then have Marc (the gentleman who is kind enough to help us out maintaining our website) post these erratic thoughts for the entire world to see. Most of the time, these blurbs are random thoughts. Every once in a while I will receive email in response to one of my columns that kind of stops and makes you think. Recently I received an email from a gentleman who has become a good friend and supporter of the band over the course of the last few years. He had read my most recent column, and had some thoughts of his own. I tend to be an early riser (more often than not rising between four and five in the morning). I like to wake up early, drink my coffee, and get my day started. If I don't, I feel like I've wasted precious time that I can't get back. My actual work day begins at eight in the morning. Not having a computer in my home, I like to be at work by seven so I can look at the band's email before I get started with my tasks for the day. As I fired up the computer, and began to go through band emails, I came across one of the most interesting and insightful things I have ever read. What really struck me was the honesty and point of view by which it was written. Writing music from a personal point of view...I don't always stop and think about people’s responses from their own point of view, or how it may affect them in some sort of way. I've always been of the opinion that I write for myself, and if other people like it for some reason or another...that’s great!!! And if people don't like it or understand it, that's ok as well. It is so easy to get caught up in what you are doing, and forget that other people are out there. These are people who might just have something to say to you. And if you would indulge me for a moment, I'd like to share just a little piece of something somebody has shared with me... |
"I was thinking, a while back, about the relationship between a band and their audience. It strikes me that the act of producing music is courageous and generous act. Some might say egotistical. Well, maybe, in the sense you've got to believe you've got something to offer. Courageous, because you risk rejection; generous, because you don't know what we'll do with it. We might find things you didn't intend. When you give it to us, it becomes ours, as much as it was yours. But, at best, it brings us all together. I feel that's happening a lot. I believe it's what makes Fetish Lane a special place. I don't know why, it's just happening..." It has always amazed me that people liked and cared about us enough to take time out of their busy lives to come see us play. What amazes me even more is that people care enough to share things (like what is written above) with us. Starting out w/ just the two of us over 12 years ago (playing music in Ken's Ottsdawa apartment), I never dreamed that we would have a real band, and have met so many of the wonderful people who have become like family members. Lately I've started to feel like the music was a tool...an instrument that helps those of us who are not exceptionally skilled at communicating, to reach out to people. It has become a tool that helps let others know what we think, or how we feel. But most importantly, it has become a tool that helps (as was so eloquently reminded to me by a friend) "brings us all together." Thank-you Twisty!!! |
